guide
Kihon are basic karate techniques. These techniques include:
Blocking, Punching, Striking, Kicking and Stances.
- Blocks (Uke) are used in a deflective manner. We use arm blocks, hand
blocks, double arm blocks, and blocks with special areas of the body
including the elbow, wrist, legs, etc..
- Punches (Zuki or Tsuki) are techniques hitting with the front of the knuckles.
Typically the first to largest knuckles are used unless a specialty punch is
being performed.
- Strikes (Uchi) are techniques hitting with any area of the hand or arm other
than the front of the knuckles. Areas include: elbow, blade edge of hand,
finger tips, back of fist, etc..
- Kicks (Geri) are hitting with the foot or leg. There are different types of
kicks including: rear leg, front leg, jumping, spinning, jump spinning and
others.
- Stances (Dachi) are positioning of the feet, legs and hips. Stances are
designed to do two different things, increase mobility or give more stability.
